Kissing Is More Than Just an Embarrassing Pain in the Butt

A kiss is the simple moving touch or caressing of one’s lips to another human or an inanimate object. Its cultural connotations range from being a symbol of affection to being a secret warning. Some people see it as a sign of purity while other interpret it as a sign of devotion. No matter what the original meaning, today’s kiss has evolved into a more sophisticated and creative art form.

Oxytocin – This is the chemical in our bodies that creates and controls attachment or bonding. When two people are kissing, the secretion of oxytocin increases which causes the body to bond or form a stronger connection. This chemical also plays a significant role in memory and emotion. Studies show that smiling releases large amounts of oxytocin, which is also responsible for our ability to recognize and remember faces. Therefore, when you smile at someone, you are emitting a signal of affection and this will cause them to be more likely to reciprocate and smile back.

Smiling – The act of smiling triggers the release of serotonin, a hormone that helps to alleviate feelings of stress and depression. In addition, smiling helps release the “feel good” chemicals in our bodies such as endorphins, which are responsible for reducing stress. Therefore, if you are having a hard day and you are sitting in front of the computer or TV, take a few minutes to just look at the television and give your favorite kiss to that person on the lips. This may not seem to be that big of a deal but if you continue doing this and giving your kiss, eventually you will start to notice how your lips are becoming tender or dry. Try to stay with the happy routine of smiling and kissing and soon your lips will return to their previous state.
