Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Martin Scorsese
A lot of people like gambling because it gives them a break from the day to day stress and worries of life. Gambling also helps socialize people with others. Those who enjoy gambling should be aware that it isn’t a charitable organization throwing away free money. Casinos have a set of built-in advantages that ensure they will win in the long run. For example, they are famous for not having clocks or windows so players are unaware that time is passing by while they play their games. They also offer complimentary libations, which may numb the player’s sense of reality and affect their judgment.
In Casino, Scorcese lays bare the intricate web of corruption centered in Las Vegas that had tendrils reaching out to politicians, Teamsters unions and Chicago mob bosses and Midwest mafia based in Kansas City. The movie is based on the nonfiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, who had full access to Sam “Ace” Rothstein, who ran four casinos for the mob, and wrote the screenplay with Scorsese.
Much of the film plays like a documentary, with voice-over narration by Rothstein and other mob leaders explaining how the mafia skimmed millions out of Las Vegas casinos. This is a movie that doesn’t just show you what happened; it makes you feel like eavesdroppers, and it makes you realize that the mafia is a whole other world, even in our own backyard.
Another thing that makes the movie great is its use of music. Most Scorcese films have amazing soundtracks, and Casino is no exception. The movie’s soundtrack is one of its strongest points, and it adds to the ambiance of the scene and makes it more compelling. In addition to the music, Casino has some great acting from Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone. Both of these actors did a fantastic job in this film, and they were well-deserved nominees for the Oscar for Best Actor and Actress.
While the violence in Casino is over the top at times, it is done in a way that doesn’t hurt the movie as a whole. It is not meant to be a soft-core movie, but it does show the consequences of lust, hubris and greed. This is a great film that deserves to be seen by more people, and it should be given the recognition that it truly deserves.
