How Sports Became Popular

Although no one knows exactly when sports began, it is widely believed that children have always included a game or activity in their lives. The earliest images of hunters are depicted chasing after their prey with joy. Ancient civilizations grew to value hunting as an end in itself and the concept of sports was developed to describe these activities. These days, sport has become one of the most popular forms of entertainment, with more people than ever taking part in various kinds of games.

The modern definition of sport consists of events that involve a physical component and a competitive nature. Most sports are governed by rules and customs, which ensure fair competition and consistent adjudication of winners. While winning can be based on physical events, there are also many subjective factors that make a sport a true competition. Here are some of these factors: before a game or an event is contested, it is crucial to know the rules and regulations that govern it.

In colonial Maryland and Virginia, sports attracted the most attention. While hunting was only restricted to landowners, game was abundant and available to everyone – including slaves and servants. As a result, it was socially neutral and was not restricted to those with the wealthiest properties. Sir Francis Nicholson of England organized competitions for better Virginians in 1691. These competitions included spectators of all classes and races.
