Gender Differences in Video Game Genres

Video games come in all shapes and sizes, but they are largely divided into two main genres: action and adventure. While many titles fall into both categories, action-oriented games typically focus on combat and plot. While there are many examples of both, the Legend of Zelda franchise was the first to break into this genre and paved the way for multiple sequels. Although many users draw the line between action and adventure, some games are clearly better suited to either. The Assassin’s Creed series from Ubisoft have been mainstays since 2007, and have taken gamers to a variety of historical settings.

Gamer girls and boys play a variety of genres. Both genders are equally likely to play racing, rhythm, simulation, and virtual worlds. However, girls are more likely than boys to play puzzle games, with 87% of girls playing them compared to 58% of boys. These differences are not surprising considering the heightened level of competition in video games. But even so, the popularity of gaming shows no sign of waning. For this reason, parents should be aware of their children’s gaming preferences.

As we move into the future, the concept of video games has evolved. Initially, gaming was a solitary activity, but thanks to the advent of mobile technology, it has become a social phenomenon. Its popularity has skyrocketed since its beginnings in the US at the 1940 World Fair. And it’s only going to grow from there. The technology is here to stay, and with it, new ways to play video games.
