In colonial Virginia and Maryland, sports occupied a significant amount of attention. In England, hunting was reserved for landowners. In America, however, game was plentiful and everyone – including slaves and servants – could participate. Because of this, sporting competitions were relatively egalitarian. Sir Francis Nicholson organized competitions for better Virginians in 1691. The competitions involved owners, trainers, and spectators from all social classes and races.
