The History of Sports

Most sports involve physical exertion, skill, knowledge, and luck. Players compete to win against each other, using strategies, tactics, and a combination of the three. Some sports are also governed by a set of rules, making them even more complicated. These games may involve rules, competitions, and physical events, but there are also non-physical aspects. There are several types of sports. To find out which ones you’d enjoy, take a look at these descriptions.

Some of the earliest evidence of sport dates back to more than 5000 BC in ancient China. The history of China’s culture is full of artifacts, including a dynasty-era statue that shows that gymnastics and athleticism were popular. Moreover, monuments in ancient Egypt show that there were sports and sportsmen in the land of Pharaohs. These ancient Egyptian sports included javelin throwing, wrestling, high jump, and many other activities. Other ancient societies also had sports such as the Zoorkhaneh martial art, jousting, and polo.

In the colonial era, sports occupied a great deal of attention. In England, hunting was only available to landowners. In the colonies, game was abundant and everyone, including slaves, servants, and other socially disadvantaged people, could hunt. These games were socially neutral and helped to preserve the traditions of various civilizations. In 1691, Sir Francis Nicholson organized competitions to find the best Virginians. These competitions involved trainers, owners, and spectators of all classes and races.
