The rules of poker vary depending on the game being played, but there are a few basic aspects that all variants share. A player can also “check,” which means that they do not want to bet money into the pot. This is a strategy known as sandbagging, and it is permitted unless the rules for a particular game prohibit it.
Some variants of poker do not allow the player to check, but instead require that they raise the amount of the bet if they want to stay in the game. This is often used as a strategy to avoid having to call a bet by another player, which can be risky if the other players are more aggressive.
In addition, some games of poker require the player to ante before the cards are dealt. This is a rule that can be helpful to players who are trying to avoid the blinds, but it can also be a disadvantage for players who are not very good at reading other people’s betting patterns.
